Other Projects

NOEL is always looking for new ways to bring music into the community and is involved in a variety of music-based events and activities throughout the year.

Cool Lieder 2011

As part of the Leeds Lieder + festival, pupils from local secondary schools were introduced to classical art songs by the likes of Schubert, Brahms, Schumann and Butterworth under the tuition of choral leader Sue Hollingworth. These children then opened the festival with a performance in the Quarry Theatre at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in October 2011.

The project also involved performances from local primary school pupils who sang songs they had written and composed themselves during the autumn term with the help of song-writer Sam Dunkley.

NOEL hopes to be part of the next Leeds Lieder + Festival.

Rotary Young Musician of the Year

This inter-schools project, organised in partnership with the Rotary Club of Halifax, offers students of secondary education in Calderdale the chance to perform with the winner going through to the regional competition heats. It is a great way of inspiring young musicians and supports participants from all levels of music. One of the 2009 Halifax winners, guitarist Fingal Plumpton from Calder High School, won the district final in York and went on to compete in the regional final in Loughborough in April 2010.

About NOEL

Northern Orchestral Enterprises Ltd (NOEL) is a non-profit organisation committed to providing music-based activities and opportunities for all to enjoy and appreciate, whatever their age or level. Formed in 1996 by John Pryce-Jones & Barry Collarbone and based at Dean Clough in Halifax, NOEL is passionate about music as a unique form of communication with intellectual, social and physical benefits!

Our projects, run on the principles taught by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, include a series of workshops to help teachers and musicians bring this accessible and enjoyable form of methodology into their classrooms, choirs and communities.

NOEL is reliant on funding from an annual, but by no means guaranteed, grant from West Yorkshire Grants as well as a matrix of sponsorship and donations from the business community, private trusts and charities.
