Calderdale Primary School Choir Competition

In conjunction with the Halifax Choral Society, NOEL runs an annual choir competition, inviting schools to submit a recording of their choir singing two contrasting songs. A small number of singing groups from the recordings are selected for the next stage. In the weeks that follow, NOEL’s Artistic Director, John Pryce-Jones, visits each of the selected schools and spends some time working with the choirs to help polish their selected songs.

These choirs then take part in a ‘Sing-Off’; with the winning choir invited to perform in the famous ‘Carols & Brass Concert’ in December at the Victoria Theatre alongside the Black Dyke Brass Band and the Halifax Choral Society.

About NOEL

Northern Orchestral Enterprises Ltd (NOEL) is a non-profit organisation committed to providing music-based activities and opportunities for all to enjoy and appreciate, whatever their age or level. Formed in 1996 by John Pryce-Jones & Barry Collarbone and based at Dean Clough in Halifax, NOEL is passionate about music as a unique form of communication with intellectual, social and physical benefits!

Our projects, run on the principles taught by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, include a series of workshops to help teachers and musicians bring this accessible and enjoyable form of methodology into their classrooms, choirs and communities.

NOEL is reliant on funding from an annual, but by no means guaranteed, grant from West Yorkshire Grants as well as a matrix of sponsorship and donations from the business community, private trusts and charities.
