What is the Yorkshire Youth Choir?

YYC Auditions 2012

Auditions are taking place at Northern Ballet, Leeds on Sunday 5th February 2012. Should you wish to audition, please download the audition form and return to the NOEL office with £15 and two passport photographs by Friday 6th January.

Please note; successful auditionees will be invited to either the Spring 2012 course OR the Spring 2013 course depending on their age and experience. The Summer 2012 Course is an Overseas Tour for current YYC members only and is fully booked.

Mallorca 2012 – YYC  Overseas Tour (FULLY BOOKED)

Friday 27th July 2012 – Saturday 4th August 2012

The YYC 2012 Overseas tour to Mallorca is going ahead. Places have been booked for all the members whose deposits were received by Friday 16th September. Those YYC members will be sent further details regarding the trip have been send directly to these choir members.

YYC 10th Anniversary

Next year the YYC is 10 years old! To celebrate we would like past members to join us on stage for a piece as part of the Spring Concert on the 14th April 2012.

If you are a past member or know any who may be interested, please email the NOEL office with your up-to-date contact details so we can make arrangements nearer the time.

Don’t Just Sit There – 2012 Cultural Olympiad

Over the last six months, the YYC have been involved with the Don’t Just Sit There project which is part of the i move programme; an initiative set up to create a cultural legacy within Yorkshire for the 2012 Olympic Games.

In collaboration with Leeds Youth Choir, Leeds Youth Percussion Ensemble and the Benton Park Singers, the choir have worked with London-based composer Stuart Wood to create a brand new composition celebrating Olympic spirit entitled ‘When I Move…’

The finished anthem has been awarded a coveted Inspire Mark by London 2012, officially becoming part of the Cultural Olympiad. As a result, many high-profile sporting events are requesting live performances by our young musicians such as the opening ceremony of the European Fencing Championships in Sheffield last July. The next performance is at the North of England Education Conference at the Royal Armouries, Leeds on Weds 4th January 2012.

YYC Spring 2012 Residential Course

The YYC Spring Residential Course 2012 at Queen Ethelburga’s College, York will be from Monday 9th April until Saturday 14th April with the concert taking place at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Any girls needing a new concert blouse or skirt? The concert dress order form is available to download.

Limited part bursaries are available subject to status; the application form is available to download.

What is Future Heroes?

Future Heroes Awards 2011-2012

Information about this year’s Future Heroes Awards have now been sent out to all Calderdale Secondary Schools; interested students should approach their Head of Music for details.

Future Heroes Awards 2010-2011

This year’s 13 new Future Heroes were welcomed at an awards cermony in Halifax on the 10th November featuring performances from some of  last year’s successful candidates. It was great to see how the awards have helped these young musicians and the audience were extremly impressed with their talent and enthusiasm!

Future Heroes at Harvey’s

Christmas shoppers at Harvey’s department store were entertained in November by our Future Heroes who were helping to promote the Community Foundation for Calderdale’s ‘Christmas-time’ Celebration. Two of our Future Heroes also performed at the event at Halifax Minster on the 11th December alongide the Halifax Choral Society and Square Chapel Brass to rave reviews!

Singing for Fun Groups

Pre-school Music Group for 0-4 years and their carers.

Tuesday mornings from 9.15-10.30am at Midgley Community Room (The Old Co-op)

£2 per child (£1 for secend & subsequent children)

Mixenden Childrens’ Choir

Mondays from 4pm for children aged 6-12 years at Holy Trinity Church, Sunnybank, Mixenden.

Singing for Fun Festival 2012

Details regarding the 2012 Festival will be sent out to all Calderdale Primary Schools at the start of the Spring 2012 term.

What is the Calderdale Choir Competition?

Calderdale Primary School Choir Competition 2011

Details regarding the 2011 Choir Competition have been sent out to all Calderdale Primary Schools; if you have not yet registered your interest please contact the NOEL office immediately.

Reminder to all registered choirs - your recording needs to be with us by Friday 30th September to be submitted to the judging panel.

The three successful choirs will then join us for a Sing-Off during the Autumn term to decide who will sing at Carols & Brass at the Victoria Theatre in December.

Mixenden – 12pm Wednesday at Holy Trinity Church, Sunnybank

All abilities welcome and no experience necessary! Please feel free to drop in!

NOEL’s Christmas  Sing Along – Friday 16th December

We will be returning once more to Halifax Minster for an afternoon of singing and festive fun! There will be performances from our Singing for Health & Singing for Fun groups, local primary schools & Future Heroes plus lots of merry music to sing together followed by sherry and mince pies!

Latest NECO News

Halifax Minster was host to the sublime St John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach on Sunday 17 April.

The audience at the Victoria Theatre braved the cold weather on Sunday 5 December to share in the grandeur and wonder of Handel’s Messiah. This  unique oratorio, performed annaully by the HCS since 1818, was as well received as ever!

Leed Lieder+ 2011

NOEL will be running two school projects as part of the Leeds Lieder+ 2011 Festival.

In Cool Lieder, secondary school students will be  learning to sing classical art songs by the likes of Schubert, Brahms, Schumann and Butterworth with acclaimed musical director Sue Hollingworth. The KS2 Song writing project will see primary school groups writing their own songs with musician Sam Dunkley.

Both will perform as part of the Leeds Lieder Welcome Event on Friday 7th October at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds.

Northern Orchestral Enterprises Ltd (NOEL) is a non-profit organisation committed to providing music-based activities and opportunities for all to enjoy and appreciate, whatever their age or level. Formed in 1996 by John Pryce-Jones & Barry Collarbone and based at Dean Clough in Halifax, NOEL is passionate about music as a unique form of communication with intellectual, social and physical benefits!

Our projects, run on the principles taught by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, include a series of workshops to help teachers and musicians bring this accessible and enjoyable form of methodology into their classrooms, choirs and communities.

NOEL is reliant on funding from an annual, but by no means guaranteed, grant from West Yorkshire Grants as well as a matrix of sponsorship and donations from the business community, private trusts and charities.
